BFO Lan

13th October 2006

About the event

BFOLan is organised by a group of seasoned veterans as well as a few fresh faces on the Adelaide lan scene. The goal of BFO is to provide the most friendly and fulfilling lan experience for all who attend. Events are held every couple of months, and alternate between venues in the North and South of Adelaide.

BFO boasts one of the best infrastructures of all major SA lans, with a full gigabit network and a dual Xeon system running dedicated servers of CoD2 and Quake3, as well as the lan's FTP and web servers. The October event was held at Holdfast Bay Community Centre in Brighton, a fantastic venue which features ample parking, heaps of space, more than adequate power supply and clean amenities all in air-conditioned comfort. This month's lan was a smallish event, with a little over 35 gamers turning up.

Competitions

Team IzZen

One of the biggest drawcards for this event is the 5v5 Warcraft 3: Defence of The Ancients (DoTA) competition. The competition takes the form of a round-robin tournament, with the top two teams at the end of the rounds competing in the final which is run using -lm (League Mode). The winner of the final takes the prize. Five teams entered the competition, with Team IzZen taking the honours, scoring the $200 cash prize, with MISE taking second place, each recieving a 2.5" Truewin portable hard drive enclosure.

The Bottle Throwing competition is a uniquely BFO event, having its roots back in a time when there was a surplus of sponsored prizes. Running out of games to play, the admins were struggling to come up with competitions, so the Bottle Throwing comp was born out of desperation. Contestants take turns to attempt to throw an empty 600mL bottle into a wheelie bin from a distance. If you get it in, you go again. If you miss, you're eliminated. The last man standing takes the prize. Its ridiculous, but an iconic part of the event, drawing participation from nearly every attendee.

Cyberhorse took the prize home on this occasion, winning a t-shirt and a licensed copy of Windows95 (it was a slow prize night)

The Flatout2 – Destruction Derby competition generated a lot of interest, as it provided a mindless dose of action and destruction in between countless hour-long DoTA matches. The winner Nemy scored himself a Razer Professional Gaming Mouse for his efforts.

Lachie took out the Quake3: Corkcrew Mod competition and scored himself an shiny new Intel wristwatch.

Other games played at the event include the awesome new realtime strategy game Company of Heroes,  classic Medal of Honor: Allied Assault,  and ever-entertaining Rune: Dodgeball.

The next BFO will be held in late November. Tickets are $10 each and can be purchased at the door or at selected locations around Adelaide. The location is yet to be determined, but is likely to be in the North next time around.
